Job description
Roles and Responsibilities
- Performs routine and special laboratory tests in a designated medical specialty area, recognizes test inconsistencies and takes appropriate corrective action.
- Calls in critical test results to physicians or nurses immediately and according to established criteria. Maintains the abnormal results log according to protocol. Prepares test reports legibly. Initials and dates work performed. Reviews reports for clerical accuracy and clinical indications.
- Performs quality-control tests in a designated area. Analyzes quality-control data and takes appropriate corrective action when results are outside acceptable limits.
- Documents all instrument checks, preventive maintenance, routines, problems, and corrective actions taken. Recognizes, analyzes, and takes corrective action to resolve instrument/clinical problems.
- Provides in-service training to other laboratory staff and students in a designated area.
- Performs clerical functions associated with the designated laboratory area.
- Contributes to the general laboratory functions and institutional needs. Performs specimen collection and processing duties according to policies established in the medical specialty area.
- Examining and analyzing blood, body fluids, tissues, and cells
- Relaying test results to physicians
- Utilizing microscopes, cell counters, and other high-precision lab equipment
- Cross matching blood for transfusion
- Monitoring patient outcomes
- Performing differential cell counts looking for abnormal cells to aid in the diagnosis of anemia and leukemia
- Establishing quality assurance programs to monitor and ensure the accuracy of test results
- Overseeing the work of a medical laboratory technician
