- Position Title: General Surgeon

- Reporting To: Medical Director / Head of Department

Position Summary

The General Surgeon is responsible for providing comprehensive surgical care, including pre-operative assessment, operative procedures, and post-operative management. The role involves managing both elective and emergency cases, ensuring adherence to clinical standards, patient safety protocols, and hospital guidelines.

Key Responsibilities:

1. Clinical Assessment & Pre-Operative Care

- Conduct thorough patient evaluation including medical history, physical examination, and diagnostic interpretation (X-ray, CT, MRI, Ultrasound, laboratory reports).

- Identify surgical indications, discuss treatment options, risks, benefits, and obtain informed consent.

- Develop individualized operative plans aligned with evidence-based surgery guidelines.

2. Surgical Duties (Intra-Operative)

- Perform major and minor open and laparoscopic surgeries with high technical precision.

- Ensure strict adherence to aseptic technique and OT safety norms (WHO Surgical Safety Checklist).

- Manage intra-operative complications effectively and ensure safe wound closure, hemostasis, and tissue handling.

- Utilize surgical equipment including laparoscopic systems, electrocautery, staplers, suction/irrigation devices.

3. Post-Operative Management

- Monitor patients in recovery, ICU, and wards for clinical progress and complications.

- Manage pain control, fluid management, infection prevention, and wound/dressing care.

- Evaluate and manage post-surgical complications (bleeding, infection, dehiscence, DVT, ileus, etc.).

- Prepare discharge summaries, follow-up schedules, and patient education.

4. Emergency & Trauma Care

- Attend emergency calls for acute abdomen, trauma, perforation, obstruction, hemorrhage, and related surgical emergencies.

- Perform emergency lifesaving procedures such as exploratory laparotomy, appendectomy, hernia repair, wound debridement, and abscess drainage.

- Coordinate with ER and critical care teams for rapid assessment and stabilization.

5. Documentation & Compliance

Maintain accurate, timely, and complete documentation including:

- Pre-operative notes

- Operative notes

- Post-operative orders

- Discharge summaries

- Ensure compliance with hospital SOPs, NABH standards, infection control, and medico-legal requirements.

6. Interdepartmental Collaboration

- Work closely with anesthesiologists, intensivists, radiologists, and nursing teams to ensure holistic patient care.

- Participate in multidisciplinary case discussions and integrated care pathways.

7. Quality Assurance & Patient Safety

- Participate in surgical audits, mortality and morbidity meetings, and quality improvement activities.

- Promote adherence to antibiotic stewardship, infection control protocols, and patient safety guidelines.

- Continuously upgrade surgical skills and stay updated with new techniques.

8. Training & Leadership

- Mentor junior doctors, RMO staff, nursing personnel, and OT technicians.

- Conduct clinical teaching sessions, case presentations, and contribute to CME programs.

Qualifications & Experience

- MBBS with MS / DNB in General Surgery (mandatory).

- Valid medical license/registration.

- Experience in open and laparoscopic surgeries preferred.

- Strong diagnostic ability and decision-making skills.
